Shamli is a newly created district. Prior to becoming its own district, it was a well-known tehsil under Muzaffarnagar. Initially, the district was called Prabuddhnagar. The district lies on the Delhi-Shamli national highway. It is 100 km from Delhi, 65 km from Saharanpur, 38 km from Muzaffarnagar, and only 38 km away from Panipat (Haryana). This district is bordered on the east by Muzaffarnagar, on the west by Haryana, on the north by Saharanpur, and on the south by Baghpat.

शामली जिला नवनिर्मित जिला है। अपना जिला बनने से पहले, यह मुजफ्फरनगर के अंतर्गत एक प्रसिद्ध तहसील थी। प्रारंभ में, जिले को प्रबुद्धनगर कहा जाता था। जिला दिल्ली-शामली राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग पर स्थित है। यह दिल्ली से 100 किमी, सहारनपुर से 65 किमी, मुजफ्फरनगर से 38 किमी और पानीपत (हरियाणा) से केवल 38 किमी दूर है। यह जिला पूर्व में मुजफ्फरनगर, पश्चिम में हरियाणा, उत्तर में सहारनपुर और दक्षिण में बागपत से घिरा है।
